Modeling Power Swords: Part 1

In testing out various units that I had and finding what roles I wanted to come into play for my Angels Encarmine, I needed to make more power swords. Particularly for my Vanguard Veterans I wanted to add an extra bite to their Heroic Intervention.

Vanguard Veterans with Power Swords

A little background: lately my focus in Warhammer 40k has switched to Blood Angels, mainly the Angels Encarmine, from the Eldar. This shift was mainly due to my current collection of Eldar doesn't fit my play style for 6th edition. Also, I thought I'd wait until the next Eldar Codex before painting everything. Also, my first army I had collected about 13 years ago was Blood Angels and it made sense for me to collect them again (I had sold my Blood Angels long ago to start a different army).

Originally my army consisted so far of 10 Death Company with Jetpacks, 5 Assault Marines, 10 Tactical Marines, 5 Metal Assault Terminators, A metal Librarian and a few special characters such as Lemartes.

I played a couple games with them and felt that my death company were so expensive I couldn't field much else. I also wanted to take advantage of the vanguard so I switched some things around, swapped some weapons and found I needed a few more power weapons than I had. Now my army consists of 10 Death Company on foot with Bolters, 2 5 man assault squads, a 5 man vanguard squad, a 5 man scratch built Sternguard squad (which I'll show you later), and my other current project 5 Assault Terminators.

Rather than waiting for my green stuff to come in and make press molds, I thought it would be fun to try making them out of plasticard which I bought at my local Hobbytown USA.

Basically, I drew a rectangle roughly the same size as the power sword that comes with a death company box, then making several passes with an x-acto knife separated my "blade" from the sheet. After that, I cut the point to make it sort of katana/cutlass shapped at the end and then sharpened the blade with a file.

I'll go into more detail in my next blog post as I make one for my terminator sergeant. Speaking of which, one of my brothers-in-law and I are splitting the new Dark Angels/Chaos starter set and I plan on converting most of the Dark Angels into Angels Encarmine. I'm not sure about the bikes though, I think I'll paint them up really fancy and sell them on Ebay.
